An eminent public health expert and renowned teacher, Dr Bir Singh left for heavenly abode on 30 th March, 2012.

Dr. Bir Singh, was born on 05 January 1956. He completed his MBBS (1978) and M.D. (Community Medicine, 1984) from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He was a Faculty Member at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi as Professor in Centre for Community Medicine. Dr Bir Singh was Coordinator of the AIDS Education & Training Cell of AIIMS and was also the Faculty In-charge of Sex and Marriage Counseling Clinic at AIIMS. Under AIDS Education & Training Cell, Dr. Bir Singh operated a popular telephonic aids Helpline "Shubhchintak" (Phone No.011-265 88 333) as well as its internet based AIDS Helpline "e-Shubhchintak".

His active contribution to public health has resulted in conferring of National Awards and fellowships including the Honorary Fellowship of the Indian Public Health Association (IPHA). He had also been engaged as consultant by various national & International organizations.

Dr Bir Singh was an outstanding public speaker and health communicator par excellence. He had been a regular presenter of health programmes on Radio and T.V., with close to 200 programmes to his credit. At AIIMS he had started a hugely successful series of public lectures, "Health Education Lecture Discussion for Public" (HELP). Dr. Bir Singh was also a prolific writer in both English and Hindi. He had 40 scientific articles & research papers in national and international medical journals. Dr Bir Singh had authored 19 books & booklets on health topics; more than 110 columns and articles on health in leading magazines and newspapers.

Dr. Bir Singh was member of the executive councils of many professional bodies as well as on editorial boards of many reputed journals. He had served as the General Secretary of IAPSM since 2007 (1 st term 2007 to 2010; 2 nd Term 2010 to 2012). Dr Bir Singh was also the Secretary of AIIMS alumni association AIIMSONIAN.
